No End In Sight

By Joshua Norris

By the time the old Ford finally ran the tank dry he was forty miles outside of town. A cool desert breeze caressed his face as his eyes struggled with the near total darkness. Looking back the way he had come, he thought he could still see the orange glow of the fires. What could he do now? He was stranded on a desolate road in the middle of the night - but at least he was safe from them.

He shivered in the wind and began to return to the car. It wouldn't be the most comfortable place to sleep, but it would do. Wait! His gaze snapped up to the sky and his eyes began to blindly scan the darkness. Was that? There it was again! He twisted, trying to follow the dark blur as it darted across the sky. Then came the sound of fluttering wings as one of them landed.

He fumbled the small revolver out of his pocket and fired twice in the direction of the sound before turning and running. Spending the last four years working behind a computer had not prepared him for this. His heart was pounding, his breath was shallow, and his ears were quickly flooded with the sound of his own blood pumping through his veins - blood they wanted.

He ran and ran, but they followed. The road kept going, and first light was hours away. He ran and ran, but there was no end in sight.
